Merchants

Merchants is not a barbecue restaurant. Because my appetite for barbecue was ruined by the abomination that was Jack’s Bar-B-Que, I not only had no interest in a BBQ dinner, I was very stressed about the prospects of another disappointing meal. Having perused the menus of the many recommendations from our new friend Brian at Merchants during the day…. we went back to Merchants for dinner.

Thank God.

Merchant has a nice horseshoe counter, which surrounds the massive double room/bar.  I love having dinner at a bar counter.

Brian made an amazing cocktail with the 134-proof Corsair Triple Smoked Bourbon.  Jesus was this good…and smokey…and strong. The most sensible thing was to have another another.

For dinner: fried green tomatoes with a sweet pepper sauce and the local specialty of whipped cheese with pimentos.  Excellent.

Wifey had some fried catfish, which she found a bit too flavorful.  I had the “chicken-fried chicken”, which was a riff on “chicken-fried steak”:  thin steak battered and fried like chicken, served with country gravy. In this dish, two large chicken breasts replaced the steak and was served atop garlic spinach and mashed potatoes.  This was a massive dish.  And a good one, made even better with some Texas Joe hot sauce, which I applied liberally.

I love places like Merchants. A very well informed staff who can guide you through your evening; anyone can sit at the bar alone for a meal and feel welcomed and not alone; very nice food with some imagination; a place where you want to hang out – in fact, we were there three times in 24 hours.  And it is places like Merchants where the divide between the American dining scene far surpasses that of England. Actually, the rest of the world surpasses England in the sense.
